SCIENCE WITH MIRAS

Portadas de revistasSince the introduction of the SIRMS technique, numerous advances have been made in diverse scientific fields, and the research results published in highly specialised journals, with a high impact at an international level.

APPLICATION AREAS

Células neuronales infectadas (Cortesía de L. Miller, NSLS)MIRAS (or SIRMS in English) has been demonstrated to be a unique, powerful and versatile tool in a wide range of scientific and technological areas, some of which are mentioned below:

Identificación de capas de un fragmento de una pintura antigua (Cortesía de M. Cotte)
  • biomaterials and biomedicine
  • geology and astrophysics
  • electrochemistry and surface science
  • forensics
  • industrial analysis
  • food and agriculture
  • ceramic materiales
  • catalysis
  • polymeric materials
  • archeology y archeometry
  • cultural heritage

PUBLICATIONS

There is already a prolific literature base in many fields. The following graph shows the distribution of publications by area until 2007. The number of articles published on MIRAS per año is growing rapidly, and can be estimated in > 2 manuscripts every week.

Distribución hasta 2007

Within the application areas of MIRAS, biomaterials and biological or biomedical apllications, including the areas of food and agriculture account for more than 50% of the publications to date. However, many research groups have started to introduce the technique in new areas, and are already producing an important impact in the scientific and technological literature.

MIRAS WORKSHOPS

MIRAS 2018, ALBA, Cerdanyola del Vallès, 1-2 October 2018

Not really a MIRAS Workshop in the true sense of the series, as it was not organised by users but by the ALBA Synchrotron. For this reason it was entitled THE FIRST MIRAS FTIR MICROSPECTROSCOPY WORKSHOP AT ALBA. In fact, it was the second at ALBA! However, the philosophy of the workshop was somewhat different to previous editions, as it was specifically targeted at non-expert users with a view to generate new users, and included software practicals and semi-hands-on training at the MIRAS beamline. 40 scientists from different research centers had the opportunity to learn about the technique at the hands of MIRAS team. More details HERE.

MIRAS 2012 Workshop, Valencia, 19th-20th April 2012

Organised by Prof. Alfredo Segura of the University of Valencia, Spain, and held on the 19th - 20th April 2012 in the ADEIT Building close to the city centre.

MIRAS 2009 Workshop, Cerdanyola del Vallès, 21st September 2009

The second edition of the Workshop, MIRAS-2009 was organised by Dr. Trinitat Pradell of the Universitat Politècnica de Cataluña, and held at the ALBA Synchrotron facility near Barcelona.

MIRAS 2008 Workshop, Madrid, 14th - 15th April 2008

The miras.2008 Workshop was initiated with the aim to introduce the technique and its current applications, and demonstrate the future possiblities of an IR beamline in ALBA to diverse groups of the Spanish scientific community form Universities, CSIC (Spanish Scientific Research Council), Institutions and Companies. At the workshop 8 invited lectures were given by international experts from the USA, France, Germany, United Kingdom and Spain. As a consequence, various research groups in Spain have already expressed their intention to exploit the technique in their future research. Some statisics from the workshop are presented below.
